Bay Island Gymnastics: BIG Classes to flip for!
May 25, 2010
Even if they’re not destined for Olympic Gold Medal fame, kids can still benefit from the rewards of gymnastics training. Bay Island Gymnastics (BIG), which has offered beginning to advanced gymnastics classes for the past 20 years, believes the sport helps students become happier and healthier individuals. Some of the benefits include increased flexibility, strength, coordination and self-confidence.
In 2004, BIG moved from the historic Alameda Theatre to a 12,500-square-feet, state-of-the-art facility in Oakland. Fully matted and equipped with everything from a bars area, large and small floor areas, kindergarten gym, and foam pit, the gym has an open, safe, and spacious feel, with rolling doors that open for those warm Bay Area days.
Classes at BIG include preschool-level Explorer classes covering basic fundamentals with games and creative obstacle courses for toddlers; recreational classes for students 6 years of age and over and adults of every age; and developmental classes for gymnasts who demonstrate a commitment to advance or compete in the sport. Speaking of competition, numerous BIG gymnasts have gone on to become Northern California zone, state and regional champions.
Coaches at Bay Island Gymnastics attend monthly training sessions, are USA Gymnastics members, and all have certification and accreditation in safety and risk management and professional development. The roster includes former competitive gymnasts and award-winning dancers, and on the gym floor, these pros show expertise in the sport while enjoying their time with their students. Under BIG guidance, students can learn discipline and focus while having fun, too.
While their young ones are learning to stretch and tone those growing limbs, parents can enjoy one of two common areas with WiFi access or watch the action on the floor from the loft’s viewing platform. Parents can rent BIG facilities for birthday parties, when staff members help with games and activities and the birthday celebrant receives a Gold Medal.
HelloMetro Tip: On Fridays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., BIG hosts an open, drop-in gym for all ages. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Also, check the calendar for Parents’ Night Out.
